Reg E. Cathey,59, of ‘House Of Cards’ fame, died in New York City at the age of 59. Cathey was a life long chain smoker, and had been battling stage 4 lung cancer. The actor died Saturday morning surrounded by friends and family in his New York City home. Cathey has been in the entertainment business for over 35 years. He had prominent roles in ‘The Mask’, ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘S.W.A.T.’Cathey also appeared on ‘The Wire’ on HBO playing, Norman Wilson for six seasons from 2002 to 2008.
David Simon the creator of the wire said of Cathey’s passing “Reg Cathey (1958 to 2018) not only a fine masterful actor, but simply one of the most delightful human beings within whom I’ve ever shared some long days on the set. Just with wit alone he could double any man over and leave him thinking” Actor Wendell Pierce was one of Cathey’s co-workers on the set, said” We lost a masterful actor a sonorous voice, a great colleague , and a kind friend. A more gregarious human being you could not find. A man’s whose presence was always a blessing and a joy. I’m hard pressed to remember a moment of anger.”
On ‘House Of Cards’ Cathey played the BBQ Joint owner Freddy Haynes. In 2015 Cathey won an Emmy for his performance on the show. ‘House Of Cards’ creator Beau Williams also sent condolences, he said “ Reg Cathey was one of a kind. Brimming with life force, generosity, humor, gravitas, and a fountain of talent. Loved by everyone lucky enough to know him and work with him.”Cathey was extremely close to David Simon, and the only actor to appear in all Simon’s shows. Cathey appeared on stage in London in the Morgan Freeman film ‘Shawshank Redemption’ in 2009 after doing the play in Dublin, Ireland.
