Actress Catherine Oxenberg claims her 26 year old daughter India is being brainwashed by a cult, and she desperately wants to rescue her. Oxenberg says in 2011 she stumbled upon a self help group called ‘Nxivm’ located in Albany, New York. At first Oxenberg was intrigued by the promises of the group to ‘make people ‘their best selves.’ The ‘Dynasty’ actress wanted to bond with her then 20 year old daughter so the two went to a meeting. Oxenberg thought the meeting was ‘creepy and weird’, but her daughter felt she found her home there. She started to throw herself into the teachings of the group.
India Oxenberg’s mother Catherine says, that her daughter went to meetings at the group that cost anywhere from a 1k to 3 K per meeting. She recruited her friends to join the group and emptied all of her bank accounts, from a sizable inheritance she had. India’s father has never been publicly disclosed. Keith Raniere,57, is the founder and leader of the group, whose flock of followers think of him as a ‘dynamic leader’. Oxenberg says as her daughter became more submerged in the group, she held her judgment until she knew more.
Oxenberg ran into a friend, Bonnie Piessa, who had recently left the group. Piessa told her long time friend, that she had to rescue her daughter immediately if she ever wanted to see her alive again. Former members of the group say that it’s a ‘secret sisterhood’ whose members are branded and used and exploited for the good of one man, and nothing and no one else. Anything Oxenberg has tried thus far to rescue her daughter has proven to be unsuccessful. However her constant appeal to the New York Governors office has opened an investigation of the group by Governor Anthony Cuomo’s office.
