Actress Natalie Portman Wins A Million Dollars After Being Awarded The 2018 ‘Genesis Prize’

Actress Natalie Portman was announced as the winner of the 2018 ‘Genesis Prize’, which is sometimes called the Jewish Nobel Peace Prize. Portman was chosen as the winner of the prestigious prize because of her commitment to social causes and her deep connection to her Israeli and Jewish roots. The prize of millions dollars is awarded to people who demonstrate a deep commitment to Judaism and serve as inspiration to the next generations of Jewish people around the world. Portman,36, was born in Jerusalem and holds duel American and Isreali citizenship.

Portman said today that she was extremely touched and humbled at being named the 2018 winner of the award. Portman’s father an Isreali doctor, Avner Hershlag, and mother Sherry Stevens was a homemaker before becoming Portman’s agent. Portman immigrated to the United States with her family when she was three years old. Portman said on Tuesday “I am proud of my Jewish and Israeli heritage. They are crucial parts of who I am. She said she would use the prize money from the ‘Genesis Prize’ to help Jewish woman in Israel and beyond.

Portman is a 2003 graduate of Harvard University and won an Best Actress Oscar for her 2011 role in  ‘Black Swan’. The ‘Genesis Prize’ committee noted Portman’s commitment to social causes such as gender equality, fighting poverty, animal rights and other various causes she is involved in. The committee said that Portman’s award money would be used to push equality of women in Israel and elsewhere in the world.  Realism Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu will personally present Portman with the award in June of 2018.  The prize was first given out in 2014, and former winners have been, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, actor Micheal Douglass and violinist Itzhak Perlman.
