Arnold Schwarzenegger Stable After Emergency Open Heart Surgery

The former Governor of California and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger is in stable condition at Cedar Sinai Hospital in LA. The father of five, went to the hospital on Thursday for a scheduled experimental catheter valve replacement. Sources told ‘TMZ’ that the actor suffered severe complications and had to undergo emergency surgery late Thursday night. The medical team that performed the procedure were aware that there was a chance there would be issues, and prepared accordingly. The emergency surgery lasted more than seven hours, Arnold is in stable condition, but could face complications again.

Arnold has had a history of heart problems, a Schwarzenegger source said that ‘The Terminator’ actor’s issues are due in part to his past steroid use. The former professional body builder, and seven time ‘Mr. Olympia’ admitted to decades of steroid use in 2005. Of using the drug he said, “I have no regrets about it, because at the time it was something new that came out. We went to a doctor and and used it under a doctor’s supervision. We were experimenting with it, it was a new thing. You can’t roll the clock back and say now I change my mind on this.”

Although he admitted to taking steroids, he strongly discouraged others from using them. He said,”It’s the wrong message to be sending to our youth.” Schwarzenegger underwent an aortic valve replacement in `1997, when he was 59. He said at the time, he wanted the surgery while he was still young to deal with the recovery. At the time of that surgery he claimed his heart issues had nothing to do with his steroid use, but was a result of a family predisposition to heart problems. The actor’s oldest children Katherine and Patrick were seen entering the hospital Thursday evening. The actor is still legally married to Maria Shriver after a six year estrangement.
