President Barack Obama and his wife Michele will not attend the May nuptials of Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle. Although Harry and the Obamas are good friends, it was decided that politics will be kept out of the big day. Kensington Palace issue a statement,” It has been decided that an official list of political leaders, both U.K and international is not required at Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’ wedding. Her Majesty’s Government was consulted on this decision, and formally decided by the Royal household.”
The palace has indicated that the guest list will be reserved for relatives of the bride and groom, and close friends that have known the couple for many years. The wedding will take place at Windsor Castle on May 19th. Media outlets will broadcast the wedding live, the wedding is expected to bring in millions of viewers world wide. The decision of the Royal family to not invite world leaders to the wedding, means that the former President and First Lady, will not be in attendance. A royal source indicated that Prince Harry and Meghan plan on visiting the Obamas in the near future.
Harry has become exceedingly close to Michelle Obama due in part to their dedication and work with the ‘Invictus Games’. When Harry’s brother Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011 there were many world leaders in attendance. The palace said that Prince William is second in line to the thrown, and was required to have political figures at his wedding. Harry is not required to have political figures at his wedding. He is currently 5th in line to the thrown, and will be 6th in line after the birth of William’s third child. If there are any senior members of the royal family at the wedding, it will be because Harry has a personal relationship with them.
