Bette Midler Apologies For Writing A Racially Charged Tweet

Singer and actress Bette Midler quickly apologized after she was called out for writing a racially charged tweet. The Twitter universe was a buzz after the singer wrote, “Women are ‘the N word’ of the world.” Midler may have been referencing a song written by the late John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono in 1972. Midler quickly deleted the tweet as soon as the backlash started. One twitter user said,
‘It’s just not right to use the N word, it reduces all of humanity when it’s used.”

The user continued, “All over the world women are forced to live their lives not of their making, through , power, war, religion and poverty. They pay with their lives if they seek freedom from tyranny.”Another person said, “I don’t give a dandelion if Bette Midler is quoting John Lennon & Yoko Ono. Women of the world are the N word, is inaccurate, inappropriate and irresponsible. The fact that black people are made synonymous, with oppression, tells you who the world still thinks are N-word.” In the middle of the twitter storm, Midler tried to explain herself.

Milder said, “I gather I have offended many by my last tweet. Women are the ….etc.,is a quote from Yoko Ono from 1972, which I never forgot. It rang true then and it rings true now, whether you like it or not. This is not about race, this is about the status of women and their history.” She further said that she felt the quote by Ono is compelling now, because of the Supreme Court nomination involving Judge Brent Kavanaugh. Midler said, “The too brief investigation by the FBI infuriated me. Angrily I tweeted with out giving better thought to the words I used. I didn’t think or realize the words would be enraging to black women who doubly suffer, both by being women and by being black. I am an ally and stand with you, and always have. And I apologize.”
