Political commentator Bill O’Reilly, 67, was forced out of his anchor positions at Fox News after 20 years. O’Reilly dominated the network with the highest rated news show on cable TV. Recently several sexual harassment claims that have been settled out of court by the network have come to light. The revelations sparked outrage among various women’s groups and over 50 sponsors pulled out of advertising on O’Reilly’s show. The network released a statement “ After a thorough review of the allegations, the company and Bill O’Reilly have agreed that Bill O’Reilly would not be returning to the Fox News Channel.”
O’Reilly has maintained his innocence of all charges and allegations and released a statement today in response to the firing. The statement read in part “Over the past 20 years at Fox News, I have been extremely proud to launch and lead one of the most successful news programs in history. It is tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims. But that is the unfortunate reality many of us in the public eye must live with today.” O’Reilly is currently vacationing in Italy and according to the network will not appear on Fox News anymore.
Two and half weeks ago the New York Times ran a story indicating that O’Reilly and the network settled five sexual harassment claims against O’Reilly. The total dollar amounts of the settlements totaled more than 20 million dollars. As different sponsors will pulling out of the show daily, omen’s groups were calling for O’Reilly to be fired. President Trump has been tweeting and weighing in on the O’Reilly matter, saying “He’s a good man, and he deserves support.” He also said that O’Reilly shouldn’t have settled, because “It’s never good to settle”. Trump said “I don’t think Bill did anything wrong,” said the President.
