Johnson has been out and about promoting his current film ‘Rampage’.During his press junket for the film he has been discussing his struggles with depression. The actor said he’s been dealing with it since the age of 15. Johnson revealed that the onset of the illness came about after he watched his mother attempt suicide.

Johnson said, “Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed. I reached a point where I didn’t to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly.” Johnson thanked his fans for their support. The actor said he received an overwhelming amount of positive support. He said,” We all go through struggles, and depression never discriminates. Took me a long time to realize, but the key is to not be afraid to open up. Especially us dudes have a tendency to keep it in. You’re not alone.”

Johnson first started to discuss the delicate issue of his mother’s suicide attempt in February. He said working on the HBO show ‘Ballers’, brought the issue up again for him, because the show deals with the subject. He recalled the actual incident, he said, “My mom tried to check out when I was 15. She got outta the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic. Big rigs and cars were swerving trying not to hit her. I grabbed her and pulled her back onto the gravel shoulder of the road.” Johnson said his mother has no clear recollection of the incident, and he believes it’s for the better.
