World renowned scientist Stephen Hawking died early Wednesday, he was 76. The physicist died at his home in Cambridge, England. Eddie Redmayne, played Hawkins in the 2014 film ‘The Theory Of Everything.’ The actor released a statement, “We have lost a truly beautiful mind, an astonishing scientist, and the funniest man I ever had the pleasure to meet. My love and thoughts are with his extraordinary family.” In 2015 Redmayne took home the Oscar for his portrayal of Hawking.

Hawking was very happy with the film and with the actor’s portrayal of him. He said in 2015, “I thought Eddie Redmayne portrayed me very well in the ‘The Theory Of Everything’ movie. He spent time with ALS sufferers so he could be authentic. At times I thought he was me. Seeing the film has given me the opportunity to reflect on my life. Although I’m severely disabled, I’ve been successful in my scientific work. I travel widely and have been to Antarctica and Easter Island, down in a submarine and up on a zero gravity flight. One day I hope to go into space.”

Hawking also added that, “I’ve been privileged to gain some understanding of how the universe operates through my work. But it would be an empty universe indeed without the people that I love.” Hawking was diagnosed with ‘Lou Gerhrig’ disease when he was 21, the disease eventually diminished all of his motor skills and left him wheel chair bond for the rest of his life. Hawking was married twice, his first marriage to Jane Wilde produced three children, Robert, Lucy and Timothy Hawking. His children also released a statement that read in part, “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man, whose legacy will live on for many years.”
