‘Empire’ Producers Weighing Their Options After Jussie Smollett Arrest

Jussie Smollett went from an alleged victim to a defendant in a ‘filing a false police report case’ in 3 days. The ‘Empire’ actor turned himself in to Chicago Police at 5 a.m. On Thursday. He appeared at a bond hearing several hours later, and plead ‘not guilty ‘ to the charges. He was ordered to surrender his passport, and pay a $100,000 bond. The Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson held a press conference before the bond hearing.

Johnson said as a black man, he was offended by Smollett’s crime, the top cop said, the actor was unhappy with his ‘Empire’ salary. Johnson also indicated that the letter threatening Smollett’s life sent to Fox nine days before the ‘attack’ was written and sent by the actor. Johnson called Smollett ‘a troubled young man’ who restored to crime to gain attention and promote his public profile. Johnson said the actor should apologize to the city of Chicago, and pay back the hundreds of thousands of dollars in police resources that were used during the investigation. After news broke of the January 29th ‘attack’ celebrities and fans showered the actor with support, today there was dead silence.

Now the producers including Lee Daniels are weighing their options concerning Smollett’s tenure with ‘Empire.’ Variety is reporting that the producers are contemplating suspending Smollett from further work on the show, pending the outcome of his ‘legal situation.’ Many fans are calling for a boycott of ‘Empire’ if the actor is not fired from the show. The actor was expected to be on the ‘Empire’ set on Thursday. Smollett, surrounded by a security detail left the Chicago courthouse late Thursday to face a throng of media, shouting ‘why did you do it?’ ‘Empire’ producers issued reports earlier in the week that Smollett’s future on the show was never in jeopardy prior to the ‘attack’. They remained publicly silent on Thursday.
