Hospital Employees Fired After Viewing Jussie Smollet’s Medical Records

Several employees at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago have been terminated for cause. The employees accessed actor Jussie Smollet’s medical records without authorization. A spokesperson for the hospital says that doing what the employees did, is a violation of the rules of the hospital. According to a source with information, at least 24 employees have been filed. Some of the fired employees said they simply scrolled past Smollet’s name, but did not directly look at the actor’s records. The hospital has refused to directly address which employees were fired, ‘due to privacy issues.’

The spokesperson did say that the rules of the hospital are in compliance with federal laws. The person went on to say, ‘there are serious allegations, and in the past patients have sued and won several lawsuits siting ‘invasion of privacy issues.’ The medical records of celebrities have been a ‘hot topic’ for decades. There have been times that celebrity health records have garnered millions of dollars. In 2008 UCLA Medical Center fired 10 employees for snooping into the medical records of Britney Spears. During that time Spears had a mental breakdown and was in the psychiatric unit at the hospital.

Smollett was hospitalized briefly on January 29th at Northwestern after an alleged racist and homophobic attack on a Chicago street. Smollett has since been charged with filing a false report. Some of the fired employees in the Smollett case say they have unfairly been fired. They claim they did not pull records of Smollet, but simply scrolled past them. Smollet is currently out on $100,000 bail. He asked for special permission from the court today to be allowed to travel out of Illinois. A judge granted Smollet permission to go to New York and Los Angeles to meet with his legal team, but ‘no other place.’ The actor whose character has been written out of ‘Empire’ will be in court again on March 14th.
