Jay-Z’s mom Gloria Carter came out as being gay on her son’s new massively successful single ‘Smile’ of the album ‘4:44’, Gloria raised her rapper son and 3 other children in the Marcy Houses, a public housing building in the Brooklyn, NY neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant. Carter’s son and daughter in law Beyonce were highly supportive of Gloria, calling her ‘brave and a hero’ and not hiding anymore. Gloria said everyone from her own family to complete strangers have congratulated her on her courage to come out in her late 60’s.
The song ‘Smile’ is a duet sung by mother and son, it’s the first time either have discussed Gloria’s orientation in public. One verse from the song says “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian, had to pretend she’s a Thespian.” Gloria sings on the song too, she says, “Living in the shadow/Can you image what kind of life that is? In the shadows people see you as happy and free. Because that’s what you want them to see.” Jay-Z and his wife Beyonce Knowles Carter, just welcomed twins, Rumi and Sir.
Although Carter has never addressed his mother’s orientation, he has been very LGBTQ friendly when it comes to any causes or legal issues. In a 2012 during an interview with CNN the rapper said he strongly was in favor of same sex marriages. The father of three said, that he never saw the point in denying anyone the right to get married. He went on to say he believes it holds people back when you say to a certain part of the community, they can’t do a certain thing. He said “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can chose to love whoever you want.”
