Legendary Rocker Tom Petty Dies At 66 After Being Found Unconscious In His Malibu Home

Musician Tom Petty was found unconscious in his Malibu, CA home and was transported to UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center. The call came in at around 10:45 pm Sunday night stating a man was  not breathing. Doctors said in statement they believe Petty suffered a cardiac arrest before being found. He was put on life support and doctors were able to get a pulse. However family members of the late singer decided to remove him from life support after it was determined he had no brain activity.

Petty grew up in Gainesville, Florida. He dropped out of high school to pursue his love of music. He started a band called ‘Mudcrutch’ with two close friends, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. The three would later go on to form ‘Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’. Petty released 2 albums with ‘Mudcrutch’ and 10 with the Heartbreakers. He also released two albums with the super group ‘The Traveling Wilbuyrs’. He won three Grammy Awards and just wrapped up a 40th anniversary tour. Petty was married twice,  his first wife Jane Benjo from 1974 to 1996. They had two daughters director Adria Petty and dancer AnnaKim Petty.


He married for a second time in 2001 to his current wife, Dana York. He sold over 80 millions records in more than 40 years as musician. A chaplain was called to Petty’s hospital room on Monday morning. According to sources, the singer had a ‘do not resuscitate order’. Witnesses at the hospital said Petty’s wife Dana York and his two children were in the hospital with the singer. Singer Sheryl Crow tweeted”This us unbearable, first Vegas now this.” Close friend and sometime collaborator, Cameron Crow said “No words, just thanks,” Nixxi Sixx said “Thank you for all your music. Prayers to your family and band-mates.”
