Mary Lou Retton Eliminated From ‘DWTS’ After Revealing She Divorced Her Husband

The former Olympic Gold gymnast, Mary Lou Retton was sent home from ‘Dancing With The Stars’ on Monday night during the Halloween show. The former cover girl of the ‘Wheaties Box’ said ‘This has been the time of my life.’ Retton says the show has taught her a lot about her self and this is a new beginning. Retton was told in the final minutes of the show she ‘was in jeopardy’ along with model Alexis Ren. It was Retton and her pro dancer partner Sasha Farber that was cut from the show, for a combination of lowest scores from the judges and viewers.

As Farber and Retton were filmed practicing for Monday’s dance, Retton revealed for the first time publicly that she divorced her husband Shannon Kelley. The divorce was finalized in February, after a 27 year marriage and four daughters. Kelley was a Houston real estate developer. He now works for the Houston Baptist University athletic department. Retton revealed that she felt ‘alone for a very long time’ and the divorce should have been done years before. Retton says being on the show came at a very important time, when she is rebuilding her life after divorce.

Retton said, “I hadn’t challenged myself in decades, and I challenged myself and I’m off to a fresh start.” The former gymnast said of her ex, “We still love each other, but we’re not great together anymore.” She said this has been a very hard painful time, and she credits her four daughters for loving her unconditionally throughout the whole process. She said “I’m so grateful for them, without my girls I would be lost.” Retton told Farber that when she first showed up for rehearsal she was so scared. Now she says, “I’m still scared but I’m very excited about what comes next.” Her elimination was surprise as she had good scores throughout the competition.
