Montel Williams Happy To Be Alive After Suffering A Stroke

Long time talk show host Montel Williams suffered a cerebellar hemorrhagic stoke in June. The 62 year old former Marine is talking about his near death experience for the first time. The type of stroke Williams suffered is extremely rare, more than half the time causes death, or severe neurological damage. Williams had the stroke in a gym in the middle of a workout in June. The Emmy winner was hospitalized for 21 days, 10 of those days in critical condition. Williams said, “I’m very lucky, when it happened I didn’t realize the veracity of what this was.”

Williams continued, “When you start thinking of it in those terms, the percentage of people that die from this type of stroke, that’s harsh reality. I’m so blessed to be alive, and I’m not taking it for granted.”The day started out as a normal day for Williams as he was working out in the gym of his New York hotel. He was doing what he calls “a very intense workout’. He had been working with weights he explained. He said, “But while holding my breath and coming up from weighted squats, after 30 of them, I heard a loud noise.” He says the noise he thought was coming from behind him.

He realized no one was there, he circle the room with his eyes. “As my eyes came back around, the whole room started to kaleidoscope and I was hit with this instant wave of tired.” He thought he just had a stroke and threw the weights down. Williams’ assessment was correct, the sound he heard was that of a blood vessel in his brain breaking. The father of four knew from watching the Dr. Oz show, that you can’t lay down after a stroke. He managed to make it to the fourteenth floor to his apartment. His wife Tara called an ambulance. He said every day is recovery day for him, he gets stronger every day.
