Actress Scarlett Johansson is in the hot seat for accepting the role of a transgendered man. The film ‘Rub And Tub’ will be directed by Rupert Sanders. The film tells the true story of a transgender massage parlor owner, Dante ‘Tex’ Gill. This is the second time Johansson and Sanders have worked together. Their other film, ‘Ghost in a Shell’ also caused controversy when the actress played the part of, Japanese manga character, ‘Major Motoko Kusanagi. The actress who does not have any social media accounts, released a statement to ‘Bustle’.
The statement read, “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman reps for comment.” The actors Johansson referenced in her statement all portrayed transgendered people. The main bone of contention with people weighing in seems to be that transgendered characters should be played by transgendered actors. One transgender actress, Trace Lysette, said that it’s just not fair that Johansson and other actors ‘have no right taking those roles. She went on to explain that roles of non-trans roles is not available to transgendered actors. Other actors are saying that these are acting roles, and any actor should be able to play any character, without a person’s private sexual orientation being considered.
Lysette went on to say, “And not only do you play us and steal our narrative and our opportunity, but you pat yourselves on the back with trophies and accolades for mimicking what we have lived..so twisted, I’m done.” Another transgender actress Alexandra Grey, said more discussion was needed. She proposed having a round table with the paper ‘The Hollywood Reporter.’ She said, “You need to reach all those executives, studios, show runners, and networks who will see it and who will have the power to make some moves and really help shift the industry in a more inclusive and diverse direction.”
