Basketball great Shaquille O’Neal just wanted to help a Forest Park, Georgia family out during a time of extreme grief. The former NBA star was so touched by the tragedy that he said he just had to help the family. Melachi Hemphill, 13, was live streaming on ‘Instagram’ when he accidentally shot himself with a gun he was handling. Police have reported that between 30 and 50 of Hemphill’s friends were watching the live stream as the boy shot himself.
There is no clear indication of where Hempill got the gun from, it is believed it was from a friend of a friend. The police in Forest Park called the incident a “horrific event”, and believe there was no malicious intent, and the shooting was done accidentally. However they haven’t ruled out any charges being filed, the matter is being investigated. After Hempill shot himself his friends started showing up at his home, the family said there were a few dozen kids on their front lawn within 10 minutes of the shooting.
Shaniqu Stephens the boy’s mother said she heard a loud boom coming from her son’s room. She and her daughter raced to the room, they had to kick the door in, they found him in on the floor in a pool of blood. Paramedics were called to the scene and he was transported to Grady Hospital where he died a short time later. O’Neal said it’s a small thing he can do to “ease the pain of the family.” Hemphill’s grandmother said the family is struggling with no insurance, so she’s grateful for O’Neal’s help. Grief counselors have been called to Babb Middle School in Forest Park, Georgia where Hemphill was in the 7th grade.
