Multi-platanium recording artist Ed Sheeran,26,deleted his Twitter account after a barrage of disparaging comments were made to him. The red headed singer’s current album has sold over 8 million copies. Sheeran told the ‘London Times’ that he has completely quit ‘Twitter’ saying “I can’t read it, I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things.” He went on to say that it plays with the mind, the constant stream of mean negative comments. Sheeran said he has no idea why people are so mean to him, and he’s done trying to figure it out!
The singer also singled out Lady Gaga’s fans as being the meanest. He said he did an interview recently when the subject of Gaga came up. He said he didn’t say anything mean about her, but her fans took his comments and twisted them, and have been harassing him non-stop since the interview was published. Lady Gaga interjected herself into the Sheeran storm by saying he’s a very talented artist and needs love and respect, like all humans do. She urged her fans and all people to “act kinder and gentler towards other people.”
Sheeran said his own father gives him plenty of ‘constructive’ criticism, so he doesn’t need any negatively from strangers. Many celebrities refrain from using any type of social media because of potential negative remarks. Superstar singer Adele quit ‘Twitter’ in 2012 after she was bullied, and received countless death threats against her and her baby. Actor George Clooney, who recently had twins with his wife Amal, said he thinks that celebrities who go on Twitter are really stupid. One wrong tweet, and you can end your career Clooney said. Tina Fey of ’30 Rock’ fame said she thinks people should have to have a license before being allowed to be on ‘Twitter.
