Put one Olympic gold medal on the board for the US thanks to a 17 year old snowboarder named Red Gerard. Redmond Gerard is originally from Ohio but lives and trains in the skiing community of Silverthorne, Colorado. Gerard is the youngest American to ever win an Olympic medal in snow boarding. Gerard entered his last run in last place, but blew his competition away by earning a score of, 87.16 from the judges.

The kid from Colorado blew up social media seconds after the win. One Twitter user said “Wow watching Red Gerard go from 11th place to winning a gold medal gave me chills.” Another tweet said, “Congrats Dude, couldn’t have happened to a nicer snowboarder.” The athlete talked to US magazine about the possibility of winning a medal in South Korea. He said if he won something, “I can just maybe go out with the family and have a nice dinner, nice and easy.” Gerard’s parents andsix siblings are cheering the athlete on from the sidelines at the Olympics.

“It’s a unique name, and I just really liked it when I heard it.” Jen and the rest of the Gerard clan was jumping up and down as Gerard’s final score was announced. At a post win press conference Red said, “You know over the time, it hasn’t really set in, but it’s kind of getting there slowly. I’ve been doing quite a bit of interviews. That’s kind of been helping, but it’s been kind of crazy. It’s been really awesome, you know just landing a run in general. Lucky enough to get on the podium and then to win was just crazy. My whole family is here celebrating. So hopefully I’ll get to hang out with them soon. It’s been wild, I’m really excited for the ceremonies.”
