Melanie Brown, aka ‘Mel B’ is opening up about her suicide attempt in 2014 while married to her ex husband Stephen Belfonte. The singer’s upcoming book ‘Brutally Honest’ discusses a very low point in the singer’s life. In a recent interview to promote her memoir Brown revealed that she swallowed 200 aspirin pills that she had been saving. It was after a night out with her then husband. Mel said from the outside her life appeared to be picture perfect, but inside she ‘felt emotionally battered’.
Brown writes,“ I felt ugly and detested by the man who once promised to love and protect me, my husband and manager Stephen. A man who after ten years of marriage now had a library full of sex tapes that could as we both knew destroy my career and my family.” After taking all the aspirin she had second thoughts about killing herself. She said,” Suicide was not the answer. I had to make my life count. I had to get to the hospital.” She says her memory of that time is now not very clear, but she remembers throwing herself against a locked door.
The incident left her with visible bruises on her face, that had to be covered up with heavy makeup for a taping of her show, ‘X Factor’. She collapsed at the studio and was taken to a hospital, where she went in and out of conciseness. Her daughter Phoenix who was 15 at the time saw her mother in the hospital and was ‘livid’ which caused a deep sense of sadness for the singer. ‘Brown skipped an ‘X Factor taping the day she was hospitalized, she tapped a show the following Sunday against the advise of her doctors. During the time of the suicide attempt Brown took off her wedding ring. Their divorce was settled this year, with Brown ordered to pay Belfonte $20,000 a month in spousal support.
