John McEnroe’s tireless tantrums on the tennis courts were legendary. He was the powerhouse player in the 70’s and 80’s. His screaming and yelling at judges rulings he disagreed with catapulted him to instant fame and infamy. McEnroe now 60 gave an interview to NPR recently, he said if Williams played in the men’s circuit she would never rank more than 700. McEnroe said there is no question that Williams is the best female tennis player in the world, but if she had to play against men it would be a different story. McEnroe actually said Serena could never hold her weight against men.
McEnroe said, “ I don’t think Serena is an incredible player. I do, but the reality of what would happen would be I think something perhaps it would be something a little higher, a little slower. And on a given day Serena could beat some players. I believe because she’s so incredible strong mentally she could overcome some situations where players would choke, because she’s been in it so many times. So many situations at Wimbledon, the US Open, etc. But if she had to just play the men’s circuit, that would be an entirely different story.”
Serena Williams has acknowledge on more than one occasions that there are definitely difference between men and women when it comes to tennis. She told David Letterman in 2013 that she things because of rules that’s it’s like two separate sports. Williams said if she had to play Andy Murray she “would lose 6-0,6-0 in maybe 4 or 5 minutes, 6 minutes at the most.” McEnroe said he supposes it’s possible for a woman to better than a man, but he’s never seen it any sport, and he certainly hasn’t seen it in tennis.
