Tyra Banks Named New Host Of ‘America’s Got Talent’

Tyra Banks will be joining ‘America’s Got Talent’ as the new host the producers announced today. Banks will join judges Howie Mandel, show creator Simon Cowell, Mel B, and her long time friend and super model Heidi Klum for season 12. The show has been on the air since 2006, Nick Cannon abruptly quit his hosting duties  late last year, leaving the show in the hunt for a new host. Cannon had been the host since 2009 and left the show because he claimed he was being “exploited.”

The show was in negotiations with Marlon Wayans, Brandon Mychal Smith and Tone Bell. Cowell and the rest of the production team tried to secure Wayans, but sources are saying his price tag was just too high. Tyra recently ended her long association with the show “America’s Top Model”, and was not necessarily looking for a new hosting gig. However the offer was just too good to refuse, and she is said to be thrilled to be joining the cast. Howie Mandel first broke the news on his Twitter account, Banks also confirmed the news a short time later.

There has been a delay in filming the current season due to an unexpected death in Mel B’s family. However all players are now in place and filming will begin this week in Hollywood. Tyra Banks, 43, has had enormous success as a super model and entrepreneur with her own cosmetics line. She was the first African American model to appear on the ‘Sports Illustrated’ Swimsuit Edition. In 2013 she started dating Norwegian photographer Erik Asla. The couple had a son through surrogacy, York Banks-Asla born on January 27th, 2016. Banks said that the hosting gig on ‘AGT’ will allow her to be with her son every day and evening, due to the mostly morning filming schedule.
